The field of digital marketing has emerged and exploded as everyone and everything now operates in digital spaces — buying, selling and using Web-based applications. “Marketing is always done where the people are, and increasingly we find people migrating to the digital spaces,” Jacques says. “Professionals who can leverage the power of digital marketing via mobile devices, social networks, graphic design and the web are in high demand in the job market.”
Digital marketers can monitor what’s being viewed, how often and for how long, sales conversions, what content works and doesn’t work, etc. Websites are the channel most commonly associated with digital marketing, but other aspects of digital marketing include video, mobile apps, podcasts, wireless text messaging, mobile instant messaging and more.
Some forecasts predict that digital marketing spending will exceed traditional media (newspaper, television, billboards, etc.) spending as soon as 2017. In fact, 25 percent of career marketing professionals say the amount their firms spend on digital marketing already surpasses traditional media.
“A student of digital marketing needs formal training to understand the complexities of modern business and how digital marketing aligns with business objectives,” Jacques says. “But to stay up to date and on the leading edge of the curve, the learning never stops.”
